RUGGED WEST COAST
One of the largest concentrations of Eurasian otters in the United Kingdom can be found on the Isle of Mull, located off the west coast of Scotland. It has over 300 miles of wild coastline, some of it accessible by road, making it an ideal location to observe and photograph these stunning mammals (if you’re able to find them).
These beautiful and charismatic balls of fur live a semi-aquatic life and are members of the Mustelidae family. Like all mustelids, otters possess an exceptional sense of smell and hearing. To help locate their prey, they utilise their long sensitive whiskers and can hold their breath underwater for approximately 1 minute.
Despite their cute and fluffy appearance, they are savage apex predators with sharp teeth and have a powerful crushing bite. The Eurasian otter is most often found in the fresh water, but on the Isle of Mull they have adapted to a coastal life and hunt their main source of food in the sea, eating a vast array of fish, crustaceans and even octopus.
