I had photographed this urban red fox who I affectionately called Billy for over a year and during that time I had built up a rapport with him so that he became completely comfortable in my presence. I was able to walk around with him whilst he was on his daily routine navigating through the city we both call home. For an urban fox he has a relatively big territory occupying a city park, schools and many busy streets, so tracking him down wasn’t always easy.
This dramatic portrait of this red fox was taken early one morning when the sun had just peaked over the horizon. There was another human in the distance going about their daily routine and he became very alert, his ears perked up facing forward and he stared at them making sure they were not a threat. He was stood in a shaft of glorious light and everything else around him was in dark shadow.
